CEE ENERGY STAR survey reveals increased awareness
Local and regional publicity has boosted recognition, understanding of label

According to a recent national survey, local and regional programming has boosted public recognition and understanding of the ENERGY STAR® label.

The Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and its member organizations conducted the survey last spring and released results in April. Survey data clearly indicates that areas of the country with ongoing ENERGY STAR programs produce a higher level of recognition than regions with little or no ENERGY STAR programming.

Survey results are highlighted on page 2 of the CEE press kit. Complete results are available in the CEE ENERGY STAR Household Survey Report, which is available as a downloadable PDF file on the CEE web site.

Nationwide, 41 percent of households reported having seen the ENERGY STAR label on products or in promotions - up from 30 percent in December 1999, according to an earlier ENERGY STAR study. In households exposed to both state/local promotions and the national ENERGY STAR campaign, 52 percent reported having seen or heard of the label vs. just 37 percent of households in areas exposed only to the national campaign.

"That's pretty good progress and a confirmation of the momentum we all sense," said Ann Bailey, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Labeling Branch.

ENERGY STAR, which was launched in 1992, is a federal program jointly sponsored by the Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency. The nationally recognized ENERGY STAR label designates the most energy-efficient products available in the market, generally in the top 25 percent. ENERGY STAR promotes qualifying products on the national level. Utilities and energy organizations voluntarily use the ENERGY STAR levels as a platform for individual programming.

HOW THE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED
Surveys were distributed in the spring of 2000. CEE administered the survey, with funding provided by eight CEE members (Pacific Gas & Electric, National Grid USA, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Bonneville Power Administration, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Northeast Utilities, Wisconsin Dept. of Administration and United Illuminating). EPA provided technical support for the survey design, analysis, and final report.

The original survey polled 7,500 households. Additional sampling of more than 21,000 households was undertaken by CEE member organizations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Wisconsin and California.
