RESNET Conference Pre and Post Conference Workshops

This year's RESNET Conference will offer a pre and a post conference workshop.  There is no additional const to attend either workshop.

The pre-conference workshop is:

"Opening the Door to Home Performance" - Successful Rating and Building Performance Education and Marketing Strategies and Techniques" - Education and marketing are about 80% of what successful rating and building performance professionals dedicate in their work.Having the right teaching, communication and marketing tools is essential to effectively educate construction and design personnel and consumers on building science concepts and overall all advantages of high performance homes.  This workshop will be a hands-on practical session which will include working examples of successful education and marketing tools for the industry.

The post conference workshop will be led by the Building Code Assistance Project.  It is:

"Making the Case" - How to Convince Building Code Officials to Accept Home Energy Ratings as a Compliance Option to Residential Energy Codes - There is growing need to convince local and state code officials on the validity of accepting performance programs such as home energy ratings and ENERGY STAR has a recognized option to verifying compliance to the code.  There are several examples of states that have already adopted to allow ratings as alternative compliance paths.  This workshop led by the Building Codes Assistance Project will assist rating and building performance professionals sharpen their skills to convince code officials that rating programs are governed by standards and procedures that should provide comfort in accepting these as viable alternative of demonstrating compliance to the code. The workshop will focus on many issues that should make strong arguments for professionals to take back to their home states (lessening inspectors' liability, lightening inspectors' workload, better consumer protection via closer inspection by an energy professional, etc.).

Shea Homes has taken the lead in the movement towards the zero energy home by developing a community that all homes include photovoltaics as well as energy efficiency.  This tour will view this development and see first-hand the future in housing today.  The tour is limited to 28 persons.  Availability is "first-come-first served".  Sign up for the tour by e-mailing sbaden@natresnet.org.

Monday Lunch Roundtable Session Added: "Do You Know Anyone Who Waits a Long Time Waiting for Hot Water To Arrive Somewhere in Their House?: Rating Residential Hot Water Distribution Systems"

A lunch break informal roundtable has been added to the conference schedule.  Gary Kline of the California Energy Commission will lead a discussion on rating residential hot water distribution systems.  The session will take place on Monday, February 24 from noon to 1:20 p.m. in the Coronado Room.  Grab your lunch and attend this lively discussion.

The Issue

Residential building practice currently ignores the losses of energy and water caused by the poor design of hot water systems.  These losses include: combustion and standby losses from water heaters, the waste of water (and energy) while waiting for hot water to get to the point of use; the wasted heat as water cools down in the distribution system after a draw; heat losses from recirculation systems and the discarded warmth of waste water as it runs down the drain.

 The Purpose of this Session

The purpose of this session is to discuss this issue from the perspective of home energy raters and those who attempt to fix energy-related problems in homes. Participants in the session will learn more about the magnitude of the problem, about the possible solutions and about a proposed National Task Force on Residential Hot Water Distribution Systems. Participants will share ideas on how to "rate" existing hot water distribution systems, how to estimate the benefits from potential improvements and how to verify that installed changes are actually working correctly.

Please contact Gary Klein at the California Energy Commission about this session. He can be reached at gklein@energy.state.ca.us or (916) 653-8555.
